Snow-Season Sports

Skiing, Snowmobiling, Snowboarding, and Snowshoeing are all within 17 miles of White Pass.

White Pass Ski Resort, only 17 miles east of Packwood, features a Doppelmayr high-speed quad, along with three double chairs and a rope tow, and has the driest snow in the Washington Cascades area. Whether you are a Nordic or a cross-country skier, you'll love White Pass.

White Pass is also recognized as one of the greatest mountains to snowboard in the northwest.

For the snowmobiler, there is the annual "Snowmobile Hill Climb" at Execution Ski Run. You can also participate in the "Johnson Creek Sno-Park Fun Run."

All-Season Activities

Berry Picking and Mushrooming: Blackberries and Huckleberries are plentiful in the summer, and mushrooms of many varieties (chanterelle, lobster, and pine, just to name a few) are harvested in the fall. Personal Use Permits are required for mushroom pickers and are available free from the Forest Service, but a fee is charged for all commercial use permits.

Camping and Hiking: Hiking trails are numerous, with the historic Pacific Crest Trail at White Pass just 17 miles east. Hiking in the mountains surrounding Packwood is a real adventure because the wildlife is so abundant. One can also hike around the crater at Mt. St. Helens or on one of the scenic trails in Mt. Rainier.

There are many campgrounds around the Packwood area, with La Wis Wis and Ohanapecosh within 10 miles.

Spectacular waterfalls abound in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest: Goat Creek Falls, Davis Creek Falls, Cowlitz River Valley Falls, and Iron Creek Falls, just to name a few.

The fall brings an array of bursting, vibrant colors, so bring your camera and spend a day hiking, backpacking, or just viewing the brilliant foliage and taking photographs.

Before and after your hiking expedition, plan to stay a day or two, relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the mountains at Mountain View Lodge.

Fishing: The weekend corresponding with National Fishing Week has been declared "Free Fishing Weekend" in Washington. This weekend, fishing licenses are not required for food fish, shellfish, and game fish, with the exception of Steelhead Trout (and with the advent of the ESA endangered assignment, probably Chinook Salmon).

There are places where a person can fish all year round--lakes, ponds, and reservoirs fall into this class. Rivers, streams, and beaver ponds usually close by October 31. Beyond these two general situations, there are specific rules which apply to many different water sources. It would be wise to check with the Department of Fisheries.

Packwood Lake, Walupt Lake, and the Cowlitz River are just a few of the popular fishing spots in this area, with great catches of trout, pike, Chinook salmon, and other delicious fresh fish.

Hunting: For the avid hunter, the Packwood area is the place to be. Archery, modern firearm and muzzleloader hunting are permitted (with appropriate license & tags in the appropriate season), and one can hunt cougar, deer, elk, and big horn sheep. There is also a special late buck season. Packwood is the place, and the place to stay is Mountain View Lodge.
